Drowning Awareness

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month

At Little Kickers, water safety is of upmost importance to what we do! One of our main goals is for kids to develop a lifelong love of the water, for them to understand how to behave around water, and to develop crucial water safety skills.

It is especially important to highlight drowning awareness towards the end of the summer, after children have spent a lot of time in the water, because often we feel more relaxed around the pool, bodies of water, etc., but in fact August sees one of the highest numbers of drownings because of this.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death in children under fourteen years old. Most child drownings occur in the pools of friends or family. Child drownings are usually a silent event that can occur in a matter of seconds.

There are a few crucial steps parents, families and guardians can take to ensure their child is protected when swimming:

  1. It’s extremely important to make sure there is a supervisor, lifeguard or reliable adult around when having your child swim or participate in any aquatic activities. A designated water watcher is responsible for watching those swimming without any distractions. They want their full attention on the children, at all times.

  2. If you have a pool or lake in your backyard at home, make sure there is a pool fence separating your child and the body of water, and that it is locked at all times unless there is a supervisor present.

  3. It is vital to have CPR training skills if you’re supervising or coaching children who are learning how to swim.

  4. It is recommended to start children at an early age in swimming lessons. Here at Little Kickers, we provide one on one lessons with infants as young as 5 months old.

Thanks for trusting us with your kiddos and allowing us to give them crucial water safety skills!
